Medtronic Coding and Units

This is a DRAFT FHIR Implementation Guide. This version is not final yet. DO NOT USE, except for trial and test.

All measurements from Medtronic devices are coded with Medtronic codes, which may or may not be exchanged.

Where possible, a code from an accepted international code system is used. These are:

  • LOINC for measurements on patient data. LOINC is not commonly used for device-oriented measurements (such a on/off, alarms etc.)
  • IEEE 11073 codes were appropriate.
  • Snomed CT codes when the above do not apply, or when a jurisdictions prefers Snomed CT codes.

UCUM

The Unified Code for Units of Measure is a system for exchange of units in a standardized, non-ambiguous way.

Example UCUM codes

g/L gram per liter
10*9/uL billion per microliter
Cel degree Celsius

mmol/L millimole per liter

LOINC

LOINC is a publicly available standard at no cost (only a registration is required). LOINC is the de facto standard in the laboratory and clinical measurements domain.

Example LOINC codes

Code LOINC Long common name
14749-6 Glucose [Moles/volume] in Serum or Plasma
15074-8 Glucose [Moles/volume] in Blood
97507-8 Average glucose [Mass/volume] in Interstitial fluid during Reporting Period
32016-8 Glucose [Mass/volume] in Capillary blood

ISO/IEEE 11073

ISO/IEEE 11073 is a family of standards in Personal health device communication. The framework provides a general approach as well as specialized sections for glucose monitors, insulin pumps et cetera. Medtronic uses the MDC codes are 32-bit unsigned decimal integers versions of the code, also known as the CF_CODE10.

Medtronic codes

The Medtronic codes are used for internal consistency, as well as encoding of concepts and data items specific to Medtronic devices, where no matching standardized code might be availble.
